Teaching Your Child to become a Carnātic Music Rasikā
This is a series of articles on effective methods to teach your child to listen to, understand, and appreciate Carnātic music.
If you are an adult who knows nothing about Carnātic music (or even any other genre of music), and want to learn to listen and appreciate it, most ideas here will likely work for you as well.
These articles have come out of my ongoing experiences with teaching my own child to listen to and appreciate Carnātic music. My goal has been to introduce the music to my 2.5 year old child and grow him into a rasikā with a solid foundation, while making it interesting, exciting, and enjoyable (see also: Why teach a child to become a rasikā?). Some of the learning techniques used have been loosely inspired by ideas from here.
What these articles are not
These articles are not about:
- how to teach your child to learn to sing or play an instrument (finding a guru is best for this; though building up your skills as a rasikā will help with learning the art)
- an introduction to Carnātic music or any of its concepts (there are many very good online resources for these; this article series is specifically about teaching your child (or yourself) to become a rasikā)
Work in Progress
These articles are a work in progress, and several parts are yet to be written. Also, these articles may be updated from time to time to reflect the current state of my understanding, as it evolves.
