Why teach a child to become a rasikā?

When I started formally learning Carnātic music myself at age six or so, I found it to be far easier than my peers, learned it much faster, and enjoyed it immensely, all because I had listened to my family play and discuss Carnātic music for the years prior. That enjoyment has never stopped, and has been a great gift.

With my own child, I decided to take this a step further beyond passive listening, and actively engage him in learning. My goal is to make him a solid rasikā for his own enjoyment, but do so at an early age so he has the opportunity to pursue Carnātic music as an art if he so desires. This is an ongoing experiment, and I share my experiences here.
